Required Gear/Wetsuit Guidelines
Required Gear:
- Helmet use is mandatory. All racers are required to wear a CPSC, ANSI, or SNELL certified bicycling helmet while biking.
- Mountain bikes with at least a front suspension system are recommended. Racers using cyclocross bikes will not receive an official time.
Wetsuits:
XTERRA rules on wetsuits differ from those of USA Triathlon. In general XTERRA swims are short and athletes are not in the water as long as
other races (i.e. Iron Distance). Since XTERRA races are a cut tougher than the usual road tri we prefer using the International Triathlon Union
(ITU) wetsuit rules. Here are the specifics:
For Age Group Athletes:
- Wetsuits are mandatory if the water temperature is BELOW 57 degrees Fahrenheit (14 degrees C)
- Wetsuits are permitted if the water temperature is AT or BELOW 72 degrees Fahrenheit (22 degrees C)
- Wetsuits are forbidden if the water temperature is ABOVE 72 degrees Fahrenheit (22 degrees C)
For Professional Athletes:
- Wetsuits are mandatory if the water temperature is BELOW 57 degrees Fahrenheit (14 degrees C)
- Wetsuits are permitted if the water temperature is AT or BELOW 68 degrees Fahrenheit (20 degrees C).
- Wetsuits are forbidden if the water temperature is ABOVE 68 degrees Fahrenheit (20 degrees C)
* the water temperature in Lake Leatherwood is typically above 72 degrees Fahrenheit in early June. The water
temperature will be measured the morning of the race to make a final determination.
